I've been producing music casually as a hobby for the last decade or so, mainly sample driven hip-hop using a Roland MV 8800. The second half of my twenties I found myself really getting into electronic tunes and in turn started branching out into less familiar production territory.I recently upgraded my equipment and am finally where I'd like to be in terms of a software/hardware set up and have been getting my feet wet with footwork/juke/jungle/drum & bass. It's a bit of a challenge stepping into the world of 160 from 80-120.
I'm looking forward to honing my skills. You definitelly have more experience than me but I guess I could give you a few tips. What 'worked' for me is to stop listening to the 'old' 4/4 electronic stuff from the 90s/00s (don't get me wrong I still love it). If you really want to get those juke rythms right you'll have to force yourself to only listen to footwork for a while (specially the Teklife sound). This is not techno or hip hop where you can just copy/paste a loop for 3 minutes straight.
In a footwork track patterns change all the time and if you already are familiar with mpcs this should be fine for you (even better if you do drums). I guess that you already know this from hip hop but don't try to use many sounds/samples. Stick to 3 or 4 four first and try to apply as much rythm and variation as you can. As far as i understand the history, initially, footwork music was mostly produced for actual footwork battles and a lot of ogs refer to that purpose in their interviews. As i have no dancers near my hometown, i kinda like listening to my sketches on some muted youtube video of battles from chicago and just try to get a feel if the combination makes sense, might also give me further inspiration where to head to. But generally, i'd say don't try and stick to any rules too much, imo it's also the liberty what you can make out of it that makes the 160bpm world so interesting.
